What is the Episcopal Church?
We are what can be called a "reformed church". In the 16th century the Church of England separated from the Church of Rome, and began reforms such as translating the Bible into English, using the scripture as the primary rule of faith and eliminating mandatory celibacy for clergy and more. For those looking for meaning and a deep spirituality, the Episcopal Church offers acceptance and God’s unconditional love. We seek to remove any barriers between your relationship with Jesus Christ and try to provide an authentic, kind, and caring Christian community.
In Laredo: In 1881 several Laredo families formed a new Episcopal parish. Christ Church has been in Laredo for more than 140 years, first on the corner of Davis and Farragut downtown, and later at a newer building on Lane Street in the Heights where we are today.
In Southwest Texas: The Diocese of West Texas comprises 88 congregations today, spread from Brady in the north to Brownsville in the south, from Del Rio in the west to Port Lavaca and Edna in the east.
In the United States: The Episcopal Church in the United States is a group of about 1.5 million Christians whose roots and worship go back to worship in the British Isles in the first few centuries after Jesus formed the church.
Globally: Episcopalians form part of the global Anglican Communion, active in 165 countries, forming a large part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Anglicans comprise about 85 to 95 million of the 1.5 to 2 billion Christians alive today.
