READINGS AT CHRIST CHURCH -
Thank you for being willing to read the lessons at Christ Church. We are grateful for your time and service! We usually put reader on one time a month and we will give you contact info for other readers if you need to trade with someone. We believe the Bible is one of the main ways God speaks to us. Like many other churches we read several parts of it each Sunday. Our lectors, (readers), read the first two lessons and lead the congregation in saying one or part of one of the psalms. GOING UP TO READ Movement to and from the podium As soon as it’s time for the lessons simply walk up, stand at the podium, take a moment to breath, then introduce the lesson and read. Once the second lesson is over, simply go back to where you were sitting. Podium Height The podium is tall. When you get to the podium there is a red cushion that can be used if you need more height. Microphone The mic will be on. But even with the mic on, please project your voice. Better to be a bit loud than not to be heard. FIND THE LESSONS BEFORE SUNDAY Find the Lessons for the Sunday you are going to read You can always find the lessons and psalm for a given Sunday by going to the website below. Go to the site and then choose the month and Sunday from the calendar. Click on the lessons and they will show up in order. This site also uses the same bible version (New Revised Standard) that our bulletin inserts use. Occasionally there are multiple options. You can contact the church office to ask whish ones will be used the Sunday you are reading. LECTIONARY SITE: : Lectionary Calendar – The Episcopal Church INTRODUCING THE READINGS AND LEADING THE PSALM Usually people will sit, but you may start by saying: “Please be seated.” 1st Reading Once people are seated you say: “Our first lesson is from the book of: (name of book, Isaiah, Genesis, etc.) After the reading is finished pause briefly and then say: “The word of the Lord.” The congregation will respond by saying: “Thanks be to God.” The Psalm At Christ Church the custom is to stand for the psalm. You have two options. We usually read the psalm with the reader reading the first half of the verse and the congregation reading the second half like this: “Please stand and let’s read Psalm (use the Psalm number in the program) by half verse.” Option 2: But if you choose, we can all read together. In that case begin like this: “Please stand and let’s read Psalm (number) together in unison.” After the psalm invite people to sit again and introduce and read the second lesson. 2nd Reading Once people are seated you say: “Our second lesson is from the book of: (name of book, Isaiah, Genesis, etc.) After the reading is finished pause briefly and then say: “The word of the Lord. The congregation will respond by saying: "Thanks be to God." At that point head back to your seat. Después del salmo, invita a los presentes a sentarse de nuevo y presenta y lee la segunda lección. Segunda Lectura Una vez que los presentes estén sentados, dice: “Nuestra segunda lección es del libro de: (nombre del libro, Isaías, Génesis, etc.)”. Después de terminar la lectura, haz una breve pausa y luego di: “La palabra del Señor”. La congregación responderá diciendo: “Demos gracias a Dios”. En ese momento, regresa a tu asiento.
