Worship - Why it matters
The readings for this coming Sunday, July 10th start with a strong admonition from God, spoken by the prophet Amos. God's people in the promised land are divided by a civil war, and the Northern Kingdom is engaging in idol worship. Amos says this will have serious consequences.
It is still true today. I have spoken to clergy and seminarians from other countries, and I ask them what they think Americans really worship. They invariably say: "Money and Power".
When I ask what the consequences of such worship are, they often respond, "Greed and envy". But one time when down in southeastern Mexico a person thought for a moment and responded, "If you keep on worshipping those things, ultimately you will only have depression and despair."
It reminds me that worship of God is not just going to church. Instead my coming to church is the place where I get the power to love God, however poorly, and get grace to love my neighbor more.
Join us this Sunday on the journey to love God and one another. English services are at 8 & 11 a.m. and Spanish services are at 9 a.m.
As many of you know Terry Palacios-Smith passed away unexpectedly last week and the funeral took place this past Tuesday evening. Thanks to so many of you who offered condolences to her family. Please keep them in your prayers.
