Despite the rain, I have been in a “dry place” spiritually for much of the last year. When talking with a trusted friend he reminded me that living things have periods of growth, pruning, dormancy, and harvest. “That applies to your spiritual life too. You don’t control the growth; God does. Keep worshipping, studying, praying, believing, and serving.” he admonished.
I needed the reminder that growth, physical, spiritual, emotional, numerical, rarely proceeds at an even pace. A few days later when I was walking, I thought about why I came to Laredo. Not the fact that the bishop asked me to come, but the dream and the hope of what God could do at and through Christ Church. I realized that dream has not changed.
My dream for Christ Church is that we grow in all the areas listed below. I hope that we grow large enough to have a “baby”, to start another Episcopal Church in another part of town. I hope that some of our brightest and best young people will discover God and the Church calling them to become priests. I hope that as a body we make missions both local and international part of our life fabric. I hope that we take Christian Education seriously, knowing that the only hope for our world’s healing is the love of Christ proclaimed and lived out. I pray that we will take our worship as seriously as we take our children’s education and our jobs. I pray that our fellowship will deepen and that we will enrich each other’s lives.
Churches grow warmer through fellowship. Churches grow deeper through discipleship. Churches grow stronger through worship. Churches grow broader through ministry. Churches grow larger through evangelism. (Pastor Rick Warren, “The Purpose Driven Church”)
This summer we’ll look at how we spiritually as followers of Jesus, and how we can grow in depth and members as a community of Christians.
