My grandmother was born in Galveston, my father grew up in Houston. Anne and I met and got married in Houston, on the eve of Hurricane Allen in August 1980. My aunt and cousins, and numerous friends still live in Houston. I spent many vacations on Mustang Island as a child and a teenager, and have spent many times on the beach as an adult. I still root for the Astros baseball team. So it shouldn't have surprised me, but I woke up grieving on Monday morning, and was surprised by the current of emotion and loss.
What do we do when faced with the kind of disaster? There are some hints in this weeks Lectionary lesson from Romans 12:13, and 15 . "Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality." and "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."
From Father Paul Frey:
Welcome - Worship
Grow - Give
We believe our mission at Christ Church is first to welcome people into a loving community of Christians who care for, and support one another. Secondly to learn how to grow closer to God through worship:prayer, sacrament, and study. Thirdly we hope that we will grow, meeting God, learning the Bible, and how God can use our abilities and gifts, so we can give of ourselves in response to God, the greatest giver of all.
Last year, I sent out a letter as we began our Stewardship campaign. It contained what we lovingly call an "Estimate of Giving Card." We changed the name from "Pledge Card" for a reason. We know that financial situations can improve and decline over the course of a year. Our hope is that many of us actually have a better year than we expect. But as we have seen so dramatically, life is not as predictable as we think.
This year we will send out the letter, but I am asking you to NOT fill out a card until you have taken several weeks to pray and ask God what your giving should be. In addition you will get information about our endowment funds and how we hope to make those increase so that the generations that come after us can be blessed by our fiscally responsible decisions.
