1973 - Sitting on the porch of the Bar None ranch in Giddings, out of the summer sun, I listened intently to my host, Margo, a church leader from Houston I’d met a few days earlier. I’d been explaining my recent conversion to Christianity and my recent sobriety and how I was leaving Denver in just over a month, headed off to college in the Fall.
With very keen insight and gentle probing, she helped me realize that I still needed a great deal of formation and accountability to avoid a relapse into my past. “Why don’t you come and join the intentional lay community at Redeemer Episcopal Church in Houston? Giving a year or two of your life to a group of people who can help you stay sober, and do some good work in a poor neighborhood might be a good prelude to college” she asked.
There is much more to the story, yet that encounter changed my life. Some of the pieces of my life puzzle fell into place that afternoon.
