Funerals

Our Funeral services offer to God the the precious people in our lives. If someone has died, please contact the church and the pastor immediately. And if your family has a loved one who is near death please notify the church so that we come and pray with the person dying and lend our support to the family. To help you think through your loved one's service please review the following: "Planning a funeral". If you have a loved one near death please read "Before Death Occurs."
Funerals are not one of the classical sacraments, yet because we honor the body that God made, and know that Jesus honored the human body by becoming incarnate in the Virgin Mary's womb, we treat them with the same respect as our other sacraments.
Funerals for Christians are first and foremost a reminder that because Jesus rose from the dead, we too live in hope of the resurrection. While they are times of grief they are also a time of celebrating the amazing love and power of God, the hope we have of a future eternal life, and a time of thankfulness for the persons life.
We also want to urge those who have lost loved ones to stay in close contact with the pastor and other church members. We want to support you in your time of loss.
Music
Musicians are not always available depending upon the time and date of a funeral, but when possible, music is always appropriate. The document "Before Death Occurs" has a list of some of the music often used at funerals. There are many other pieces that are appropriate. Please coordinate music the clergy. These two links have accompanying music files for many hymns and songs. Often if you know the name or first line of a hymn it can be found by using the Digital Hymnal, (published by volunteers of the Seventh Day Adventist Churches) Go to: http://digitalhymnal.org/dhindex.cfm
Funeral Services used at Christ Church
We use the services from the current, and former Episcopal Prayer Book Funeral Services: 1979 Book of Common Prayer Rite 1 (older English) Rite 2 (newer English) the 1928 Prayer Book Funeral Service 1928 BCP (Previous prayer book)
Cemetery
Christ Church used to have a section of the City Cemetery on Meadow and Saunders. Our section is near the corner of Saunders and meadow. In 1894, the Ladies Guild of Christ Church Episcopal was assigned a plot in City Cemetery. Three years later, on March 10, 1897, Christ Church Episcopal was deeded a plot located near the Main gate of the City Cemetery along Meadow Avenue. This deed was granted to Reverend J. Ward, rector of Christ Church Episcopal, for the Bishop and Standing Committee of the Missionary District of Western, Texas. While we no longer own the plot, we are grateful for the place we have in the history and tradition of the City of Laredo. While we no longer own the cemetery section we are grateful for the repose of our many loved ones here in this place.
For more information on funerals or burials please call the church office at (956) 723-5714.
